The Ames Izaak Walton League offers one of the only 200-yard rifle ranges in this part of Iowa. The Outdoor Range offers high-power rifle distances of 50, 100, and 200 yard; small-bore distances of 40, 60, 77, and 100 meters; and pistol distances of 50 and 60 feet.
The Outdoor Range is open to members daily (when it isn't reserved for club sponsored events). In order to be good neighbors, the board of directors asks that our members refrain from using the shooting ranges before 7:30 AM and wrap up their shooting activities by sunset, keeping noise limited to reasonable, daytime hours.
The Outdoor Range also hosts monthly defensive pistol matches for those shooters who want to learn practical defensive skills with a pistol. The matches are affiliated with the International Defensive Pistol Association (IDPA). For more information on the IDPA please view their website at http://www.idpa.com/.
IDPA Matches are held the 2nd Sunday of every month. Results are posted on the Central Iowa IDPA group hosted on YaHoo (use the link below).

Ames Ikes are also affiliated with the Civilian Marksmanship Program in the spring of 2002. The club will sponsor rifle matches throughout the year. Additionally, a group of Ames Ikes travels to the Camp Perry, OH each summer to compete in the US National High-power Service Rifle Championships. If you would like more information on the CMP check out their website at www.odcmp.org. If you would like information on shooting in the US Nationals, please contact the outdoor range coordinator.
Our berms were re-faced in the fall of 2006 and a culvert replaced our extremely worn foot bridge. We replaced most of our target frames with a new steel post system that will last much longer than the 4x4 posts we used previously.
